I grew up hearing these words: You can do anything you put your mind to. I was expected to go to college and have a sucessful career. My parents wanted me to have a better life than they had and that meant more money.
What they didn't understand is that I loved my life growing up. Even knowing that there were things we couldn't afford to do, I always knew that I was loved.
Just because we can do anything we put our minds to, does not mean we should.
In today's society, children are told that unless they go to college, there is no way to have a sucessful career. Women are told that to stay home taking care of their family, is to waste their life. I say these women are blessed to have the opportunity to be home.
While in college, I struggled to figure out what I wanted to do with my life. I had trouble choosing a major and finally settled on business because I thought I could do pretty much anything with this degree. I still didn't know what I wanted to do.
The problem was, I was looking for what I wanted instead of what God was calling me to. I now know that His plan for me is to be a home with my daughter homeschooling her and taking care of my home. And I have never been happier.
I began my married life with $18,000 of student loan debt and may not ever use my degree again.
We should all seek what God wants for our lives before accepting a situation just because others want us to. Just as my parents wanted the best for me, I want the best for Abby. But I must realize that what I believe to be best may not be anything compared to what God has planned for her.
The best I can do for Abby is to encourage her to seek God's will and submit to it.
In His Service,
Angela

Wonderful post! : ) I'm a new reader of your blog and think what you've written is definitely true. I think that things were different many years ago for families/their children, but slowly began to change over the years. This is a discussion that I have very often with my husband and it will be something that I am certainly going to keep in mind when we have children.
